Summary Description:
Performs and/or assists with daily care, including personal hygiene care, toileting, feeding, mobility, bathing, routine monitoring, special procedures, protecting the rights of members, smoking, and other activities as assigned. Daily care includes, but is not limited to:
o Personal hygiene care ? AM care includes bathing or washing, applying deodorant, combing hair, oral care, shaving, dressing, toileting, feeding, providing fluids, transferring, straightening member?s living area, and making beds. HS (hours of sleeping/bedtime) care includes bathing or washing, removing clothing and assisting with night wear, oral care, and sending soiled clothing out to be laundered.
o Toileting ? includes assisting member to the restroom; cleaning after elimination; applying/changing incontinent products; assisting with bedpans, urinals, commodes; emptying urine collection bags; routine catheter care, changing colostomy/ostomy appliances.
o Feeding ? includes providing water or other fluids of the appropriate consistency; passing, and setting up meal tray while ensuring that the food is of the appropriate consistency; assisting with the intake of fluids, meals, and nourishments as needed; monitoring and recording food and fluid intake; cleaning dining area, member, and wheelchairs, as needed, after meals.
o Mobility ? includes turning and positioning members in bed per member?s care plan, assisting in transfer activities, correct use of mechanical lifts as ordered, completing range of motion exercises when ordered, assisting with ambulation, assisting with wheelchair as needed, and encouraging independence when appropriate.
o Bathing ? includes full body bath or shower, sponge bath, washing hair, trimming nails, applying lotions or ointments, using specially ordered shampoos, complete change of bed linen.
o Routine monitoring ? includes monitoring of vital signs, measuring height and weight, measuring intake and output, collecting specimens as instructed, documenting observations, reporting observations to nurse.
o Special Procedures ? includes ensuring assigned members get to scheduled appointments in time; assisting with admissions, discharges, and transfers; cleaning members? personal areas; cleaning equipment; application of ointments, creams, or other treatments as instructed by individual member care plan and/or nurse; applying special equipment or assistive devices; ensuring alarms are in use as ordered, functioning properly and documentation completed.
o Protecting the rights of members ? includes keeping call lights within reach at all times, give members choices whenever possible, treat each member with respect, assist in recreational activities, assist in spiritual activities.
o Smoking ? members requiring assistance with smoking will be assisted by the CENA who is assigned to the individual member, following the member?s individual plan of care.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
? Minimum of six (6) months experience and ability to work with the elderly in a long term care environment is preferred. However, the GRHV will consider CENA applicants who have successfully completed their CENA training, but have not yet completed their CENA certification under the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid State Operating Manual (CMS) Standards. Any CENA applicant who has not completed their CENA certification will be permitted to work for up to four (4) months immediately following their completion of training, but they must be certified no later than the end of four (4) months. If the CENA does not complete certification within four (4) months immediately following their completion of training, the CENA may no longer be assigned to GRHV. Out of State Licensed/Certified applicants will also be given four (4) months to comply with State of Michigan CMS Standards and achieve full certification (this does not apply to non-USA certification/licensure).
? Ability to provide assisted care according to accepted standards, with patience, tolerance, and caring at all times.
? Willingness and ability to improve knowledge about the elderly and their care, and apply that knowledge to the work place.
? Ability to deal effectively with persons of diverse backgrounds, personalities, and capabilities.
? Be aware of the type of individuals they are working with in a long term care environment where there are many patients who have psychiatric conditions who can be/are unpredictable at times.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
